This store was opened in a small shopping complex in a residential area in Parklands in 2000. The current owner took over in 2002.
The business is well established in the neighbourhood. A number of new video stores opened in the area recently but these are not close enough to this store to have had a significant effect.
Turnover varies according to season. The owner and franchisor collaborate on what stock to purchase. Payment for purchases need to be made in the month following delivery, which has a positive effect on cash flow.
The shop has a larger than usual collection of 1400 DVD titles (video tapes have been phased out) valued conservatively at R250,000. Other assets include shelving, a computer with rental software, a DVD player and TV. A revamp is optional, in stores where it has been done it has cost around R30,000.
One full time permanent staff member earns R2000 pm. Casuals make up the rest of the workforce, their wages are between R9,50 and R10,00 per hour.
The current lease was signed in 2004 and runs until 2009. There is a 10% annual escalation.
The area has proven to be supportive of video stores. Special advertising is not really required. The main success ingredient is owner presence.
This is an opportunity to buy a well known video franchise brand. These stores have proven to provide a solid income if managed well.
