WORCESTER :BACKGROUND INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
Worcester is situated in the heart of the Breede River
Valley, only 120 km from Cape Town. It lies on the main
route to Johannesburg (N1) and Port Elizabeth, with a
wide range of services and commercial activities.
Worcester is a town with a particularly impressive
cultural heritage, and the museums provide a glimpse of
the past, as well as lots of information for the tourist.
Surrounded by majestic mountains and verdant valleys,
Worcester is seated in the biggest wine-producing
district in the country – producing between 20 and 25%
of South Africa’s wine and spirits at 24 co-operative and
3 private wine cellars on the Worcester Wine Route, as
well as 2 Brandy Cellars. Worcester also forms part of
the R62 – the longest wine route in the world.
As if stepping back in time, the town’s cultural village,
Kleinplasie (little farm) is a working agricultural museum
with weavers, candle makers and all sorts of traditional
activities going on. There is a large blind school in
Worcester, and to enable residents to cross the road
safely, the traffic lights emit a variety of unusual sounds.
HISTORY
In 1818 Lord Charles Somerset instructed J.H. Fisher,
magistrate of Tulbagh, to find a suitable area for the
establishment of a new magisterial seat. The area of
present day Worcester impressed him so that he
consequently recommended this area to Somerset. The
loan farms Roodewal (also Roode Draai) and Langerug
were obtained from Du Toit and Barend Burgers in 1818,
were joined together to establish a town, called
Worcester, in 1820. The name comes from Lord Charles
Somerset's brother, Marquis of Worcester.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Worcester is a large town with about 75 000 residents.
People from all over South Africa sent their visually and
hearing impaired children to attend it’s schools, namely
the De la Bat School for the deaf and the Nuwe Hoop
Centre, and the Pionier School for the blind. A variety of
primary and secondary schools exists in the town –
whilst two colleges amalgamated to form the new
Community College.
Worcester has a large number of medical practitioners
and two hospitals. One is a provincial hospital, Eben
Dönges, and the other is a private hospital, MediCity -
also part of the MediClinic Corporation. Several
pharmacies exist in the central business area.
There are three libraries, of which the main library is
situated in Baring Street. The other two are in
Zweletemba and in Van Huysteen Avenue.
The nearest surrounding towns are De Doorns (35 km),
Ceres (60 km), Wolseley (42 km), Paarl (52 km),
Villiersdorp (53 km) and Wellington (56 km).
