Calvinia Background Information:

Calvinia was named after the great religious reformer John Calvin. It is situated in the Hantam Karoo, at the foot of the Hantam Mountains. Hantam is a Khoi (Bushman) word meaning "where the red bulbs grow". It is the regions key growth point and one of South Africa's largest wool-producing areas. In South Africa's largest province, the Northern Cape Province, Calvinia is about halfway between Cape Town and Upington in the Karoo. It is the sort of place where you can relax and recharge the batteries without the bustle of over-populated holiday resorts.

Calvinia and the Hantam Karoo is best known for its wild flowers. In the flowering season, the whole area is covered with flowers. As far as the eye can see, millions of different coloured flowers forms a carpet in
the veldt.

Calvinia is situated 31°30'S and 19°44'E, 970 m above sea level. The average summer temperature in Calvinia is 22°C, but frequently soars above 40°C. During winter the average temperature is 10°C, but it may plummet to -8°C, with an average night temperature of -2°C, with severe frost.
