Background Information Kenton-on-sea
History :
Along the shore is an historic ‘Dias Cross’, erected five centuries ago by Bartholomew Diaz, the first Portuguese ocean explorer to sail along the eastern coast of South Africa.
Kenton is a melting pot of history, from the British Settlers of the 1800s to the indigenous Nguni people who settled in this region hundreds of years ago. The land between Kariega and Bushmans River was bought from the Government by a British settler Charles Butt in 1878 for the sum of 400 pounds. He established a farm growing tobacco and vegetables.
Kenton has a variety of very old cottages in-between the newly built homes. Many of the old cottages were from the original Settlers and later holidaymakers, who knew about this jewel of a holiday resort.
Location :
Kenton lies between the two tidal rivers, the Bushmans and Kariega Rivers, on the East Coast of South Africa, about 80 minutes from Port Elizabeth, 30 minutes from Grahamstown and 15 minutes from Port Alfred. Midway between Port Elizabeth and East London, Kenton-on-Sea is easy to reach along the coastal road between these two cities. The nearest airport is in Port Elizabeth with regular flights to and from the major city centres.
