Background Information Lamberts Bay :
Lamberts Bay was initially called Otterdam until 1913 when the village was officially proclaimed as Lambert’s Bay and the first properties were sold.
In 1918 the town experienced its first economic boost with the opening of a crayfish canning factory which continued to run, in various guises, until the late1950s.
Lambert’s Bay has gradually become more and more popular as a holiday location and tourist destination. The village has seen an unprecedented growth in the property market over the past three years.
The two-and-a-half hour journey from Cape Town makes it close enough for a weekend getaway but far enough away to appeal to those looking for a quaint, not-too commercial destination. The mild Mediterranean climate is a real draw-card as even the rainy season winters have sunny days.
The West Coast Road (R27) is now completely tarred from Cape Town to Lambert’s Bay save for two short stretches of 8km and 10km respectively and this has certainly had a positive effect on the local property market and the tourism industry.
The seasonal attractions, such as the Namaqualand flowers from August to September, whale watching from July to October and the crayfish festival in March make the village even more attractive from an investors’ point of view. There are a number of flourishing self-catering, guest house and bed and breakfast facilities.
Amenities in the town include a primary school with senior schools in nearby Graafwater and Clanwilliam, a pharmacy, a number of restaurants, a good spread of supermarkets, a landing strip for light aircraft and safe harbour for small boats.
The two main industries are a fish meal factory and a potato chip factory.
There are a number of opportunities in and around Lambert’s Bay for adventure sports such as diving, surfing, ‘4x4ing’ in the dunes, horseback riding, microlight flights, quad-biking and sandboarding. For the less adventurous there is a nine-hole golf course, a tennis club and a rugby club.
Two different types of nature reserve in the area are on offer to tourists. The first is Bird Island, which is one of only six gannet breeding colonies in the world and is attached to the mainland by the harbour wall. The reserve is very interactive and popular with serious bird watchers.
