Langebaan Background Information
Location:
The R27 West Coast road leads to Langebaan, one of the gems of the West Coast. It is located 114km from Cape Town.
History :
A rich history dating back thousands of years. 'Eve's footprint' is the oldest footprint of the modern homo sapiens and was discovered by Dr. Dave Roberts at Kraalbaai. It is an estimated 117 000 years old. A cast of the footprint can be seen at Geelbek Visitor's Centre. In 1659 Jan van Riebeeck visited the Langebaan Lagoon and in 1660 started a permanent garrison at Kraalbaai. Khoi groups such as the Cochoqua and the Chariguriqua was found in the area before 1700. The first Khoi dictionary was documented in 1648 in Kraalbaai (400 words) and was published in a French dictionary in 1658.
General :
The well known Langebaan Lagoon plays host to between 50 000 and 70 000 birds that fly more than 15 000 kms from the North of Russia every year to spend summer at the Lagoon. The Lagoon is also one of the world's largest oyster graveyards. Oyster fossils, that were formed when oysters went extinct due to climatical changes in the lagoon, can be found in the lagoon bed.
Langebaan forms part of the Cape West Coast Biosphere, one of only four biospheres in the country and requires a certain approach to living because of the sensitive area it forms part of. The biosphere was proclaimed in 2000 by UNESCO to acclaim the inherent beauty of the West Coast and because of the special management needed if the area is to thrive.
Langebaan's natural lagoon, bay, rivers and mountains offers quality conditions for sporting activities. Some of the sports offered include: Kayaking and Surf ski, Golf, Sailing, Windsurfing and Kite Surfing Cycling and Mountain Biking Fishing and birding. The Langebaan Country Estate golf course is currently being redesigned as a Black Knight course (a Gary Player design) and will be the only of its kind on the West Coast.
The Postberg area of the West Coast National Park offers a flower trail, whale watching and picnic area for day visitors. Geelbek Visitor's Centre offers accommodation, trails, bird watching and conference facilities while the West Coast Fossil Park provides a look into the past.
